Happy Mabon, festival of abundance,

The Fall Equinox is the second of the three major harvest festivals. This year it will be on September 22nd at 6:55 pm (PDT). The Celtic name for this quarter day is Mabon: the season of storing food and preserving nature’s bounty for the coming winter months. It comes just after the Jewish New Year, which is a time of forgiveness and new beginnings and the Islamic New Year is the day after Rosh Hashanah.

The full Harvest Moon in Aries follows on September 24th, which is the Jewish harvest celebration of Sukkoth. And so the themes of this time are abundance and new beginnings. Even in these trying times, appreciating your life’s blessings and welcoming fresh starts for yourself and your loved ones are especially important.

Serpent Union, Jaya 2016

My daughter, Jamie, and her beloved Rob will exchange rings and host a beautiful wedding on the very day they were legally married one year ago. It will be held one week before the Sun rises exactly in the east and sets exactly in the west and day and night will be the same length. This symbolism of equality is a wonderful metaphor for the sacred partnership they are building and it is an emerging new model of relationships for many couples striving to expand away from outmoded gender roles and relational patterns from the past.

Yet the Sun and Earth only achieve perfect balance twice a year, so we too must embrace an expanded concept that includes the ever-changing flow of life, especially in relationships. Sometimes we feel perfectly balanced and harmonious in a moment and that is certainly something to savor. Yet it does not serve us to fearfully cling to the expectation that it must always be like this moment or something is wrong. It is as if staying the same is the only way to feel safe. Living inevitably includes the dips and wobbles as we grow, achieve dreams and have disappointments.

Sacred Partnership is a dance of opposites, weaving together all the aspects of your life together. It takes skills: holding your truth and being transparent with feelings, yet keeping the awareness that the intention is to stay in the dance; to stay in the conversation, knowing you are each other’s beloved.

Love to you all, Linda
